Armchair Critic

It pisses me off that everyone brings up the Communist card when talking about China and economics. Actually, scratch that. As long as people talk about China they will bring that up.

This isn’t just about me being Chinese, as I don’t agree with everything that they have been doing, although that always becomes a matter of concern too. Because we somehow are always a suspicious bunch.

What freedom has democracy really brought anyway? We’re still being told how we should live our lives, what happiness is and what we should be striving for. As I read the news, it bothers me much that it’s all numbers out there, and that it should all be just growth growth growth without giving a thought to the fact that there are people whose lives are being affected by these number games they play. I wish they would think about people’s well-beings for once. There’s only so many things that you can sell and only so many people who would buy. The things they’re proposing right now, it’s as if they’re putting a tiny bandage on something that needs to be amputated.

Capitalism and Communism, they’re really just two sides of the same coin. I’d like to propose that education be the solution to things because thinking definitely does people good but I can’t help but think that it’s just another gateway to the capitalist system.

Friday friday

21 Oct 2011

Just finished eating a free pretzel that I got from the convenience store on campus. It seems like they just give stuff away an hour from closing everyday. It tasted rather mediocre, being the generic pretzel that’s sold just about everywhere (or maybe it just wasn’t mean to be a cinnamon-flavored kind, I could see it working out for savory), but the fact that it’s free made it taste better.

It’s surprising how much stuff one could get around here without paying. I guess you trade your personal information, especially for all those Facebook ‘likes’ although there’s always the option of making some separate account for that, or your time having to go queue up, feign interest in the product, etc etc. People tend to not care about what they’re being sold but they nevertheless try to get themselves a piece of something. And as I look at my growing pile of plastic cups and pens, I wonder why we even bother.

Enough is Enough

10 Oct 2011

Being in design classes, it’s obvious what the hot topic is the past few sessions. And I’m tired of it. Honestly, I don’t give much of a damn that Steve Jobs croaked. Maybe it’s because I don’t really use the products he invented, or maybe it’s because the stuff he was spouting is so fucking cliche. Or maybe it’s the sad sad image of everyone parroting what he’s been saying even though we’re all just going to end up as corporate drones or slaves to some form or another. That is, if there are still jobs out there by the time I get out. Sitting in those huge classrooms, I’ve found myself wondering if there would even be anyone who would end up a remarkable human being. Realistically, chances of that are super slim and it’s not like I’m expecting anyone to be(nor myself, for that matter) and that’s a pretty depressing thought.

Stay hungry, stay foolish.. Everyone’s been doing that already. We’re all being dumbed down by devices put together by wage slaves working in terrible conditions that they kill themselves, all for your pleasure.

It’s not like I don’t find myself wanting things, heck, I would like to use a Mac for the sheer convenience of it(this, I won’t deny), but I wish that people would ponder more on how much of a necessity those inventions are.

My old age is showing but letting out all this bitterness and pessimism feels so good.

Game Day

08 Oct 2011

Picked this up at the store at the football stadium. We lined up for the free shirts(not this one) but left an hour before the game began. I don’t really care much for football, but that’s our tuition going into those shirts.
