Modan is a small publisher specializing in Japanese modernist literature, with an emphasis on works produced during the Taisho (1912–1926) and early Showa (1926–1945) period. The name, a loanword of modern, is derived from the modernist aesthetic that permeated culture on all levels in pre-war Japan.
The aesthetic also serves as the inspiration for the visual language of the brand, which aims to introduce these classics to a newer audience.
